Getting Started
A guide for new users to navigate Cardboard Empires and begin tracking your collection.
Welcome to Cardboard Empires! Before you start tracking cards, ensure your profile is configured correctly. This platform is designed to be the single source of truth for your collection.
Start by setting your Universe Preferences (Primary, Secondary, Hidden). This controls which cards appear in your inventory views and global search results. Setting a Primary universe that matches your physical collection keeps everything organised from the start.
- Primary — Your main focus universe. Shown by default in all views.
- Secondary — Additional universes you collect. Expandable when needed.
- Hidden — Universes you don't want to see. Filtered out globally.
Every card in your collection is tracked with independent quantities across three statuses:
- Owned
- Cards physically in your possession. This is the count that matters for completion progress.
- Wanted
- Cards you're seeking to acquire. Adding a quantity here puts the card on your Wish List automatically.
- For Trade
- Cards you're willing to trade away. This makes you visible to other collectors via Trade Partners.
A card can have quantities in all three statuses at once. For example, you might own 3 copies of a card, want 1 more, and have 1 available for trade.
The global search bar at the top of every page is the fastest way to find cards, sets, characters, and variants. Start typing any name or card number to see live results.
Search tips:
- Use partial names for fuzzy matching
- Combine keywords like
"Gold Foil"with character names to narrow results - Search results respect your Universe Preferences — hidden universes won't appear
Many cards exist in multiple parallel versions with different finishes, artwork, or serial numbering. When viewing a card, the variants table shows every known version grouped by GroupKey.
Common variant types:
- Foil finishes: Red Foil, Gold Foil, Rainbow Foil
- Material: Canvas, Standard Card Stock, Thick Stock
- Rarity: Insert, Parallel, Autograph, Memorabilia, Sketch, Promo
Always match the variant name exactly — the system distinguishes between e.g. "Red Foil" and "Gold Foil" as separate entries.
To keep your collection accurate:
- Quantity discipline — Update counts as soon as cards arrive or leave your possession
- Use notes sparingly — Public notes on Wish List items are visible to other collectors; keep them relevant
- Review periodically — Check your Wish List and remove cards you no longer want
- Report discrepancies — If card data looks wrong, use the Contact form to report it
