Set Checklists & Card Details
A guide to understanding how sets are structured, from base checklists to complex parallel runs and variant tracking.
Cardboard Empires organises sets using a structured hierarchy to ensure accurate tracking:
- Manufacturer — The publisher (e.g. Upper Deck, Topps, Panini)
- Set — The collection release (e.g. "2024 Marvel Masterpieces")
- Subset — Divisions within the set (Base Set always listed first)
- Card — Individual card with a specific card number
- Variant/Parallel — Alternate versions of the same card
Browse sets from the /Binders/Sets page, grouped by Manufacturer. Filter by Universe to see only relevant sets.
Each set page offers two complementary views:
- Checklist View
- Default view. Cards grouped by Subset with all variants collapsed under their base card. Desktop shows a paginated table (10/25/50/100 per page). Mobile shows a 2x2 carousel with snap-scroll.
- Parallel Run View
- Select a specific VariantName (e.g. "Gold Foil") to see every card in the set that has that parallel. Perfect for tracking completion of a single parallel across the entire set.
The GroupKey is the system's way of linking all versions of the same base card together. A single GroupKey ties together:
- The base card (
IsVariant=false) - Every parallel version (
IsVariant=true) with names like Gold, Red Foil, Canvas, Rainbow, Holofoil
When viewing a card, click Show Parallels to expand all sibling variants inline via AJAX. Each variant shows its own SerialDenominator (print run, e.g. /25, /199) and ItemType.
The ItemType field defines the nature of each card:
- Base
- The standard version — the foundation of the set checklist
- Insert
- Special limited-release cards with unique designs, not parallel variants
- Parallel
- Alternate finish/foil version of a base card
- Autograph
- Signed card, often in a lower print run
- Memorabilia
- Contains physical relic pieces (worn patches, etc.)
- Sketch
- Original artist sketch card, typically 1-of-1
- Promo
- Promotional card not part of the main set release
Correctly identifying the ItemType helps track rarity tier and collection value.
Card images follow a standard URL pattern based on the set's ImageFolder and each card's FrontImageId / BackImageId:
https://images.cardboardempires.me/{ImageFolder}/{FrontImageId}.jpgImages are served through Cloudflare R2. If a card appears without an image, it may not have been scanned yet — the database contains checklist data before images are captured.
The WhereToGet field on each card indicates retail availability: Hobby, Value, Mega, e-Pack, Retail, or other product lines. This helps identify which product types contain specific cards or parallels.
If you notice data discrepancies, visit the FAQ section for reporting instructions.
Cardboard Empires provides a printable Card Capture Sheet designed to help you scan cards quickly and consistently. The sheet uses four fiducial markers (FID 17-20) at the corners for automatic perspective correction and card slot detection.
How to Use the Capture Sheet:
- Print the sheet at 100% scale on letter paper (8.5" × 11").
- Place the sheet on a flat, dark, non-reflective surface.
- Arrange your cards face-up in the six labeled slots (A1 through C2). Horizontal cards only.
- Photograph the sheet with your camera, ensuring all four fiducial markers are visible in the frame. Use even lighting to avoid glare and shadows.
- Upload the photo through the Card Capture pipeline. The software detects the fiducial markers, corrects perspective, and extracts each card automatically.
- Review the extracted card images. Flip cards over and repeat for the back sides.

If you run into issues, make sure the sheet is printed at exactly 100% scale (not "fit to page"), the lighting is even, and all four corner fiducials are fully visible.
